Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary of Sussex County is a No Kill, non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of homeless animals in Sussex County and the State of Delaware. Currently, over 13,000 cats and dogs lose their lives in animal facilities in Delaware per year. Our goal is to eliminate this unnecessary and tragic loss. To this end we have started constructing a No Kill cat and dog sanctuary in Georgetown, Delaware,
based on the highly successful Best Friends of Utah model. The “Green,” LEED-certified facility, located in a natural 13 acre setting, will house approximately 2,000 animals per year, housing 300-400 at a time. To make Delaware a No Kill state we will also offer no/low cost spay/neuter services for the animals of our limited income residents and feral/barn cats. Once Delaware has become a No Kill state, our goal is to assist our
neighboring states to create similar sanctuaries and provide spay/neuter services.
Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary to be “Green”
To further strengthen our commitment to animals and the environment, Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary of Sussex County is in the process of building a “Green” No Kill sanctuary that will adhere to the National Building Council’s standards for LEED-certification, the national benchmark for eco-friendly buildings. David Quillin, our LEED-certified and award winning architect, has created an original design that is elegant, yet simple, cost-effective, respects our shared environment, and, most of all, is completely animal-centered. By building “Green”, Safe Haven will not only reduce our impact on the environment, but also significantly reduce our construction costs and operating costs, leaving more funds we will be able to use more directly for
Delaware’s animals, including crucial no/low cost spay/neuter services.
Safe Haven’s No Kill sanctuary will be the first LEED-certified building in Sussex County, and one of a handful in Delaware, and the first “Green” shelter in the Mid-Atlantic region and second on the East Coast. Some of the elements incorporated in the design include geothermal heat, solar hot water, use of recycled materials, a
climate controlling courtyard and a vegetative roof. Creating an eco-friendly sanctuary will not only allow Safe Haven to have a healthier environment for the animals under our care and save money on energy use so that we may spend more on the animals, but it will also lessen the impact on our planet to keep it a better place for everyone to enjoy.
