Drivers: Look out for turtles on roadways The Diamondback Terrapin is native to the Inland Bays watershed,
and the coastal dunes along Delaware Seashore State Park are a favored nesting area. The sandy vegetated habitat is perfectly suited to nesting and is within yards of the high marsh where the hatchlings spend their first year of life prior to entering the nearby coastal bays.

Unfortunately, Route 1 bisects this important, narrow strip of land that serves as a transitional zone from marsh to dunes. Each year in early summer, the female terrapins leave the brackish waters of the Bay to lay their eggs in the dunes. Many try to cross the highway to reach their nesting grounds, often killed by the high speed traffic that now uses this stretch of road.

Because of the long lived nature of these amphibians, the age of reproductive maturity is high, but they continue to reproduce for up 20 years. A loss of one female means the loss of years of her natural reproduction and potential offspring, and a loss to the total population of Diamondback Terrapins in the Inland Bays.

Though data for this season is still being analyzed, the repair and extension of the fencing on the west side of the highway was certainly a major factor in the decreased mortality.

The fencing keeps the terrapins from being able to access the road and forces them to nest on the bayside of Rt. 1. Because there is not sufficient nesting habitat on the Bay side, another challenge that terrapins, and those who wish to help the species face, is the need to improve and increase good habitat on the west side of the highway.

This was the first year that the Center for the Inland Bays joined with DNREC to raise public awareness of the Diamondback Terrapin in the watershed and participate in projects to monitor and reduce mortality.

About 50 CIB volunteers participated in the TERP program this year assisting with fence installation and repair, road patrols and dissemination of information to visitors and residents about the Diamondback Terrapin.
