Runners Live Upside Down Life.  Natural High In The Early Morning

Fifteen years ago give or take five on either side I was voted by Delaware Today Magazine as one of the first state’s 10 funniest people. The young Penn graduate who wrote the piece on me led off with “Dave Frederick has put the smart back in smartass.” I think it’s one of the nicest things ever said about me.

Last weekend Freddogg and his smartass persona covered the Saturday Great Strides 5k then on Sunday the Seashore Strider 5k.

I love showing up for early morning weekend races because I have no nighttime social life. I am upside down sleeping in the evening and prowling in the morning. Most runners are the same because knocking back drinks in the evening will kick your racing butt the next morning except that because sports offers no justice there are functional problem drinkers who can run consistently under 18 but they can’t outrun a sobriety check point.

The weekend was sad as the news of Kelly Fritchman succumbing to Cystic Fibrosis was communicated in the way bad news travels. I can tell you on Wednesday 450 people attended her service in Lewes and it was inspirational to all who were there and touched by her life.

Megan Ginder 21 of Hershey Pa won the Sunday Strider 5k. Megan was home schooled her last two years of high school and attends Houghton College in New York State. She ran 20:33 and has that peaceful looking committed to Christian ideals look about her. The longer I talked to her the more I felt like Shreck. Spirituality is good for runners it gives them someone to talk to during training runs.

There was a hot runner back in the day from the College of Marine Studies named Rich Paperno whom I nicknamed the Dissociating Professor playing the theme that only smart people who can put themselves someplace else can do distance training.

And that’s why the barely educated believe runners are stupid arguing “what is the freaking point?”

Paul Keiffer who falls into the chute at the end of every race competing in the 65-69 age group was unhappy that Tim’s column no longer includes list of names which are offered online simply by scratching the back of the wireless genus mouse.

Paul doesn’t use computers so he may have to “honk a honey” to get his name in the police report.

Two races this weekend I plan to be there limping about just remember if you talk to me you are always on the record.
