Rehoboth Marathon a success with 542 finishers

Since 1986 and the end of the Lewes Seashore Marathon, the Cape Region has not hosted a full marathon until last Saturday, Nov. 22. The Rehoboth Beach Running Company and the Seashore Striders pulled together and worked nearly a year on the event capping it off Saturday with nearly 600 participants in the event.

The race began on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk in cold 22-degree weather on a snow- topped boardwalk and traveled to Gordons Pond before heading out of town and to Lewes by way of the popular Junction and Breakwater Trail.

Runners arrived in Lewes and followed Gills Neck Road to the Cape Henlopen State Park, home of the halfway mark and the relay exchange area. The course then looped the park and brought runners back to Rehoboth Beach the same way finishing on the boardwalk at Dolle's.

Elite PT made up of Mike Monagle and ex-Olympian Vicki Rudawsky were the first to cross the line in a time of 2:40:22 to win the mixed team division, while close behind was full race champion Spencer Shelly of Ridley Park, Pa., in a time of 2:40:49. Sarah Barth of Philadelphia, Pa., won the overall female title in a time of 3:02:13.

Rick Brokaw finished 16th to finish as the top male from the Cape Region in a time of 3:03:33, while Liquid's Holly Wilson of Rehoboth Beach was 49th in 3:24:01 to finish as the top local female.

Kent Buckson and Jesse Lausch were second among teams and the top local team to finish in a combined time of 2:58:17.

I thought it would be nice to share some of the positive comments regarding the event:

"It was an inspiring event... Thanks to everyone, it was so much fun! As soon as thaw out I will start training for next year." - Jonna Krabill

"This was my 14th marathon and I think the most relaxing and positive experience even with the cold wind." - Alison Gould

"Excellent, excellent, excellent - a great day and weekend and I am sure the beginning of a long tradition of Seashore Marathon." - Mike Hitch

"This was a tremendously successful event with success to be found everywhere. This race is going to grow like Punkin Chunkin and it will be because of the warm feeling every single athlete is taking home with them. It was the race support that kept us warm and moving in the frigid temps." - Bob Hughes & Margaret Colvin

"I just want to extend a big congratulation to all you guys that did the race yesterday. You were phenomenal." - Hoyte Deck

"I will say that the event was first class. We spent Saturday and Sunday in Rehoboth (Atlantic Sands) and everywhere we went the marathon was mentioned." - Joe Link

"It was amazing how organized and smoothly things were and went. I heard 99.9 percent positive comments, so next year is sure to be huge." - Amy Linsey

Special thanks go out to the Marathon Committee, the sponsors, the nearly 100 volunteers who worked the event, the eight different agencies of emergency personnel, the Sussex County Command Center, Rehoboth's Chuck Snyder, the City of Rehoboth, the City of Lewes, the Canalfront project and, most of all, the participants and their families who participated and cheered in Rehoboth Beach.
